Another Podcast!
February 24, 2009
Greetings!
There will be another ‘The Science of Dance Training’ podcast being recorded at the end of this week! The focus of this podcast is on backs, lower back, upper backs, arabesque, back extensions, etc. Send in your questions on backs to thescienceofdancetraining@gmail.com.
Remember that we can’t diagnose conditions but we are really good at helping dancers understand the inner workings of their body – and how to maximize your efforts in dance! If we don’t answer your question in this podcast – don’t worry – it will be put on the list of questions for future podcasts.
Check back at the end of the week for the podcast posting. We are also going to post it on iTunes!

Hi Lisa!
You are a gift to the world of dance. I’m beginning the Perfect Pointe Book, and already see some pretty amazing results; I never thought my feet could get any more flexible. I was resigned to having poor instep flexibility, but I see my pointe getting better almost every time I practice.
Anyway, regarding backs: I have a pretty flexible back, and have been going to the chiropractor regularly for maintenance. However, I would like to be more flexible in this area; is it even possible to make one’s spine more flexible (I’d love to do the classic Swan Lake Odette pose, but as of this moment my back cannot arch that far)…I’d like a higher leg on penche arabesques, and deeper bends on cambre backwards without having to rely on my lumbar vertebrae to take the strain. As it is, I already have tightness in that area, and my doctor is working on fixing that. If it’s at all possible to strengthen and make more supple the spine, how can this be done safely and with long-lasting results?
I just want to thank you for the podcasts. I’m a beginner with many spine issues. Dance has helped me acquire better posture and the musculature to support it. Your lower back podcast is helping me explore and understand one my biggest problem area. Thank you and I am eagerly awaiting more!
